Our circular biorefinery approach

ALGANOVA transforms agro-marine by-products and biogenic CO₂ into valuable, microalgae-based food ingredients. The project creates a more flexible, circular, year-round system by combining different production routes.

The input

Valorisation of agro-marine by-products

Fruit and vegetable peels and mussel cooking water are pre-treated and transformed into fermentable sugars that support the growth of microalgae. This process converts low-value residues into valuable resources for food production.

Full reuse of CO₂ emissions

ALGANOVA captures and reuses biogenic CO₂ produced by industrial processes as a resource for cultivating microalgae. This closes the carbon loop, thereby improving the sustainability of the biorefinery.

The Process

Optimised microalgae cultivation

ALGANOVA improves the cultivation of Chlorella spp. and Dunaliella salina to obtain biomass with high nutritional value. This includes increased protein yields, as well as valuable carotenoids and fatty acids.

Cascade extraction of high-value compounds

Instead of recovering just one product, we extract a variety of compounds, such as proteins, PUFAs and carotenoids, from algal biomass. This approach maximises resource efficiency and minimises waste.

Digital optimisation and control

Computational tools such as GEM (genome-scale metabolic) models, digital twins and automated control systems are used to improve cultivation, facilitate scaling up and enhance process stability. These tools make biorefineries smarter and more efficient.
